3Love It Or Hate It--Train Wreck Reality Television Is Now An Equal Opportunity EmployerSep 03, 2011
By K. Harris "Film aficionado"
Let's cut to the chase. You either are going to love "The A-List: New York" or you will hate it. It is a show that brooks very little middle ground and much of your response to this program is contingent on how you react to the new evolution of reality television. As pseudo-celebrities and manufactured fame have invaded all aspects of the blissful realm of bad TV, the LOGO network has blessed the world with the homosexual answer to the "Real Housewives" franchise. So if repetitive catfights, monumental self delusion, and friendships that turn on a dime are your idea of entertainment--then this one ticks all of the appropriate boxes. I'm not going to lie. Most of the time, I found the central participants of this enterprise to be absolutely loathsome. And yet the show can have a train wreck appeal that is absolutely fascinating. Does that mean the show is good? Absolutely not. But it can be delightfully bad. And in the world of equal rights, is it not the duty of homosexual men to make fools of themselves on national TV just like any other group!

The most hysterical aspect of "The A-List: New York" is its title. Few people (aside from themselves--loudly and often) would describe the cast in this fashion. The closest to legitimacy is renowned photographer Mike Ruiz. As the oldest member of the cast--and seemingly the only one with a real career--Mike plays the Mother Hen role on occasion but tends to be elsewhere when the show degenerates into junior high antics. How he has navigated this group (on the fringes) for so long and retained some dignity is a credit to him. Next up, Reichen Lehmkuhl. This "Amazing Race" winner is, perhaps, most notorious for dating Lance Bass at the time of his public outing. Trying to build an acting and singing career provide great moments of unintentional humor. More dubious members of this self-proclaimed A-List are Ryan (a salon owner), Derek (whose biggest claim to fame is a friendship with Lindsay Lohan, but not much mention is made of that), and Rodiney (Reichen's boyfriend, a struggling Brazilian model). But as every reality show must have a villain and a provocateur, we have Austin--a former model who is past his prime at 23 or something. Claiming to want to re-ignite his career is also one of the more humorous side plots as everyone keeps telling him he is too pudgy.

The central drama revolves around two main narrative points. First, Austin is a jerk. Second, Reichen and Rodiney are in an ill-fated relationship. To his credit, Rodiney at least manages not to be caught up in the delusions of grandeur the other cast members enjoy. He is continually terrorized by Austin--whom everyone dislikes with good cause until they decide to like him for less clear reasons. Austin is a truly unlikable portrayal--probably only partly true and partly constructed for television. The show is a never ending litany of fights, insults, drunken debauchery, and mean spirited cattiness. So if you like these elements (and who doesn't--at least in small doses), you might want to check this out. If you're unsure, try to sample an episode--any episode, they all are the same in tone and content. As I said, this isn't quality TV but, for the right audience, it can be fun despite all your best instincts. It's a hit for LOGO as the program is currently in Season Two and a new branch is being birthed in Dallas shortly. There is an audience for this type of entertainment and you know who you are! If you don't despise the very fabric of the show, it can be a guilty pleasure. KGHarris, 9/11.

5A LIST: NEW YORK KICKS A$$!!!!!!!Dec 11, 2011
By Erin Lee Zimmerman "Erin Zimmerman"
I don't know what some of you are smoking, but this is the hottest show out. It's very simular to the Housewives Series, but with Gay Men! New York Series ROCKS! Especially Season 2!! I can't say the same for Dallas. Ehhh... not so much. But this show features stars such as Margeret Cho, Jessie J, and some others. You have to watch these on LOGO. Do this before you buy is all I have to say about that!

Erin.
