Worth a second lookDec 10, 2011
By K. Skoog This movie has many threads running through it. What I liked the best was how it switches back and forth between Germany and Taiwan, past and present. It also has themes of Taiwanese supernatural, Chinese mafia, family ties and betrayal, lesbian relations, grief, and guilt. I gave this movie 4 stars because any writer/director/producer who would attempt so many themes and locations gets four stars just for ambition. The movie also juxtaposes complex visual texture and beauty with modern starkness. There are a lot of hints in the beginning about what's going on, but I never get hints. I was one of those people who was truly surprised when Bruce Willis turned out to be a ghost in Sixth Sense. Now you have the hint about this movie.

By Vic San This film tried to bring you onboard but it really failed for me. I forced myself to finish it but my friend who came over to watch it fell asleep about a quarter of the way in. Enough said.
Lost Love And Mysteries Revealed In This Unusual Lesbian DramaMar 20, 2012
By K. Harris
"Film aficionado"
This lesbian drama of lost love from 2009 is set in both Taiwan and Germany and tells the concurrent tale of two relationships. In one story, a German artist is embarking on a grand passion with a young Taiwanese transplant. The second story thread, set years later, has the same artist interacting with a reporter who reminds her uncomfortably of the lost love. As the picture progresses, it appears that something rather unpleasant has befallen the first partner while everything might not be as it seems with the second one. What starts as a tentative romance morphs into an enigmatic mystery. The picture features engaging lead performances, but it may ultimately be trying to accomplish too much in its limited running time. Intriguing, but I don't know if the payoff was as satisfying as I had hoped. It seemed rather obvious throughout. Also of note, the DVD features a bonus hour-long documentary from director Monika Treut that is a worthy addition (4 Stars). "Tigerwomen Grow Wings" from 2005 highlights the changing position of women within Taiwanese society from different generational standpoints. KGHarris, 3/12.
